
A woman was reportedly abducted on Sunday while shopping with her husband and children at the popular Vegetable Market located off Airport Road in Benin City, Edo State.
According to eyewitness accounts, the family had visited the market after attending church service when armed men suddenly arrived and forcefully took the woman away, leaving shoppers and residents in shock.
A witness who claimed to have been present during the incident shared her experience in a video circulating on social media, describing the event as one of the most disturbing moments she had ever witnessed.
“I witnessed someone being taken away right in front of me at the Vegetable Market on Airport Road. It happened so fast, and many people were terrified. I even sustained bruises while trying to help the woman’s children,” she said.
The witness urged residents not to dismiss reports of insecurity in the state, stressing that criminal incidents can occur unexpectedly and affect anyone.
Confirming the incident, the Edo State Police Command spokesperson, CSP Eno Ikoedem, stated that security operatives have commenced investigations into the matter.

According to the police, the victim, her husband, and their children were at the market purchasing household items when the incident occurred.
“The command is aware of the incident and investigations are ongoing. The victim’s husband and other family members are cooperating with the police as efforts continue to determine the circumstances surrounding the abduction and secure her release,” the police spokesperson said.
The police declined to provide further details, citing the ongoing investigation.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about security in parts of Edo State, with residents calling on law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts to curb criminal activities and ensure the safety of citizens.
As of the time of filing this report, no group had claimed responsibility for the abduction, and authorities have not disclosed whether any contact has been established with the victim’s family.
