Residents of several communities in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State have fled their homes following a violent, failed abduction attempt that left at least six people dead.
The affected communities Fowowawo, Ajerogun, and Magbon-Etido have been thrown into fear and uncertainty after suspected kidnappers attacked a dredging site in the early hours of Monday.
Their alleged target was a Chinese national working at the site, but the operation did not succeed.
Eyewitness accounts and local sources revealed that the attackers, reportedly five in number, engaged security personnel and local responders in a fierce gun battle.
The confrontation resulted in the deaths of a soldier, a local hunter, and four others, while one of the suspected kidnappers was also killed.
When correspondents visited the area, many homes and shops were locked, with economic and social activities significantly reduced.
Residents who remained expressed deep concerns over possible renewed attacks.

A local hunter who participated in the response described how they unknowingly walked into an ambush after being alerted to what they initially believed was a dispute at the dredging site.
According to him, the situation quickly escalated into heavy gunfire, forcing many to flee for safety.
Community leaders confirmed that the attackers abducted four individuals during the chaos, including workers and a trader. Tragically, three of the abducted victims were later killed, while one managed to escape.
The Baale of Ajerogun Community, Nurudeen Salisu, disclosed that the presence of soldiers at the site may have disrupted the kidnappers’ plan, prompting them to resort to violence.
He also noted that a similar kidnapping incident had occurred in the area about three years ago, raising concerns about recurring insecurity.
Residents further criticized the delayed response of security agencies and highlighted infrastructural challenges, particularly the poor condition of access roads, which reportedly hindered timely intervention.
Local vigilante groups and hunters were also said to be poorly equipped to confront heavily armed attackers, a situation community members say requires urgent government attention.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command has assured residents that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and restore calm. Authorities also clarified that the incident is not linked to organized banditry.
Despite these assurances, fear continues to linger, with many families relocating to safer areas until security conditions improve.
The tragic incident underscores growing concerns about rural security vulnerabilities and the urgent need for improved infrastructure, better-equipped local security networks, and faster emergency response systems to protect lives and livelihoods.
