The Edo State Government has ordered the immediate closure of three public secondary schools in Akoko Edo Local Government Area over security concerns. The affected schools are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School and Makeke Secondary School.
The Ministry of Education announced the closure in a circular dated June 9, 2026. The decision followed an alarm raised by the Edo State Command of the Department of State Services, DSS. The DSS warned of credible threats of mass abduction of school children in Edo North senatorial district.
According to the statement signed by Enodolomwanyi Otamere for the Permanent Secretary, all academic and non-academic activities in the three schools are suspended until further notice. The ministry said the move is in line with government’s duty to protect lives and property.

The ministry directed principals to release students safely to their parents and guardians. They were also told to secure all school facilities and stay in close contact with the Ministry, Chief Inspector of Education and security agencies.
The state government urged parents and residents of Akoko Edo to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies. It said efforts are ongoing to guarantee safety and restore normal classes as soon as possible.
