Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has explained why Portugal picked Nigeria for their international friendly, saying the decision is about playing style and physical intensity, not rankings.
Portugal will use the high-profile friendly as part of their final preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Nigeria was selected as one of their African opponents for the preparatory match.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Chelle said there was no disrespect in the matchup. He believes Portugal wanted to face an African team known for physicality and game intensity.
“This is not a lack of respect. I don’t think about who is the best team. I think about the philosophy. I believe they want to face an African team due to the intensity of the game. I refer to physicality, so this presents a good opportunity to compete against us,” he said.

Chelle suggested the choice could also be linked to Portugal’s recent playoff final against DR Congo. Nigeria lost to DR Congo on penalties in the World Cup playoffs. “Perhaps they wish to evaluate how they can perform against them,” he added.
The coach also spoke about his long-term plan for the squad. He said his focus is on building a balanced team with a mix of experienced and younger players who can compete at the highest level.
“My role is to assemble the best players in the country to create a blend of experienced and younger individuals because Nigeria remains Nigeria after Eric,” Chelle said. He added that he selects players who have proven themselves consistently and ensures they are in optimal condition for the right moment.
