The Kwara State Police Command has commenced a manhunt for individuals involved in a violent mob attack that led to the death of two persons and widespread destruction of property in Ilesha Baruba, Baruten Local Government Area.
The incident, which occurred on May 30, has been strongly condemned by the police as a grave violation of the law, involving acts of retaliation, arson, and extra-judicial killings.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the violence was triggered by a clash between an unidentified Fulani man and an Islamic scholar, Mohammed Ilyasu.
Both individuals reportedly sustained severe machete injuries during the confrontation and later died from their wounds.
While the victims were taken to the hospital for treatment, Ilyasu was declared dead on arrival, while the suspected attacker died shortly after while receiving medical care.
Tensions escalated when some aggrieved youths allegedly stormed the hospital, seized the corpse of the deceased Fulani man, and set it ablaze. The mob further attacked another passerby, who was also killed in the violence.
In addition, about 10 buildings belonging to members of the Fulani community were set on fire, including the residence of the Ardo Fulani, identified as Hassan.
Security operatives, including a joint team of police and military personnel, were deployed to the area to restore order and prevent further breakdown of law and order.
