Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has said Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez should be the first player new manager Xabi Alonso replaces this summer.
Scholes made the comment during an appearance on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast with former teammate Nicky Butt. The discussion centered on Chelsea’s squad and what Alonso would need to change to implement his style of play.
“I think the goalkeeper is a problem there at Chelsea; he’s a liability. He can’t play the way they will want to play,” Butt said.

Scholes agreed, stating that Sanchez does not fit the system Alonso is expected to bring. “With the way Chelsea will play, I agree. He can’t do it. I’m pretty sure Xabi Alonso will want to play that way, to build out from the back, so he will need a new goalkeeper then.”
Alonso was recently appointed as Chelsea’s new manager on a four-year deal. The Spaniard is known for a possession-based approach that requires a goalkeeper comfortable playing out from the back, a role Scholes believes Sanchez cannot fill.
