A heavily pregnant woman has died after being hit by a reckless driver who was allegedly trying to escape officials of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) in Jos, Plateau State.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, in the city center. Eyewitnesses said the driver was maneuvering dangerously to avoid a VIO checkpoint when the vehicle veered off and struck the woman.
The victim, identified as Ruth Nen Maurice, was standing by the roadside waiting for transport to her hospital for antenatal care. A close friend, Ewan Boss Julz Odumu, confirmed the tragedy in a Facebook post, saying Ruth was carrying twins and was close to her delivery date.

The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, DSP Alfred Alabo. He said the driver had been arrested and an investigation was underway. The suspect will be charged in court once investigations are concluded.
Efforts to reach the state Chief Vehicle Inspection Officer, Mr. Jonathan Zam, for comment were unsuccessful as calls and messages went unanswered.
