Two women narrowly escaped death in Uyo on Tuesday after an irate mob stripped them naked, assaulted them, and attempted to carry out jungle justice over unverified allegations.
The incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. along Ring Road 3 in the Akwa Ibom capital. According to the Akwa Ibom State Police Command, the mob subjected the women to severe beating and public humiliation before police intervened.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John, witnessed the attack while heading to work and immediately alerted the police after noticing one of the victims was bleeding heavily.
Operatives of the command were swiftly mobilized to the scene, dispersed the crowd, and rescued the women. They were rushed to a medical facility where they are currently receiving treatment and responding positively.
Police said one suspect, 22-year-old Emediong Robert of Ikot Ekwere in Ibesikpo Asutan LGA, was arrested at the scene for allegedly inciting the mob and calling for the execution of the victims.

The command condemned the attack as “baric, degrading, and unlawful,” describing it as a direct assault on human dignity and the rule of law.
Commissioner of Police CP Baba Azare has ordered a manhunt for other individuals involved, warning that anyone found participating in mob action or extrajudicial violence will face prosecution.
“Akwa Ibom State will not be turned into a jungle where criminal mobs brutalize citizens at will. No allegation justifies public humiliation, torture, or attempted murder,” Azare said.
The police commended Dr. John for his intervention, stating that his quick action helped save the victims’ lives.
