Suspected bandits have killed four people, including a serving National Youth Service Corps member, in an ambush along the Jikamshi–Funtua road in Katsina State. The attack occurred on Monday evening as the victims were travelling on the route, which has become increasingly dangerous due to repeated assaults on commuters.
Among those killed were Saidu Nasir and Saidu Liman, popularly known as Kalipha, who was on his way to complete his monthly NYSC thumbprint. Saidu had left home earlier that day in good health, but his body was later returned to his family with gunshot wounds.
A security alert issued by Bakatsine on Tuesday confirmed Saidu’s death and described him as a committed young man dedicated to his education and national service. The statement said his killing highlights the growing insecurity faced by civilians in the region and has left his family, friends, and classmates in mourning.

“The grief facing his family, friends and classmates is profound, as communities continue to demand safety over everything else,” the alert read, while also questioning the government’s response to repeated attacks on the highway. “How many more young lives must be cut short before authorities ensure safe passage on these roads?” it asked.
Residents have long raised concerns over the deteriorating security situation on the Jikamshi–Funtua axis, calling for stronger security presence to protect travellers from frequent bandit attacks. The latest incident adds to the rising toll of violence in Katsina and other parts of northern Nigeria, where armed groups continue to target communities and road users.
