Experienced Nigerian tactician, Abdu Maikaba, is reportedly set to become the new head coach of the Flying Eagles following the departure of Aliyu Zubairu.
Zubairu left the role after accepting an offer to manage Egyptian second-division side Telecom SC. His exit created a vacancy in the national U-20 team’s technical bench shortly after he guided the Flying Eagles to the second round of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile last year.
The need to quickly stabilise the team ahead of upcoming assignments reportedly pushed the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to begin the search for an experienced replacement.

Maikaba, who is highly respected in Nigerian football and has previously worked with the Flying Eagles as an assistant coach under Paul Aigbogun, emerged as the preferred choice.
His expected appointment is also linked to his vast experience in the Nigerian Professional Football League, where he has managed top clubs including Wikki Tourists, Kano Pillars, Rangers International, and Akwa United.
The NFF is believed to be banking on his familiarity with local talent and youth development to strengthen the team’s rebuilding process.
Although an official announcement is still pending, reports indicate that discussions are at an advanced stage, with Maikaba likely to be confirmed soon to lead the next phase of the Flying Eagles project.
