
Authorities in Edo State have begun a coordinated rescue mission following the abduction of passengers during a violent attack on a commercial bus along the Lagos–Benin Expressway.
The incident occurred on Saturday, April 18, 2026, around 6:00 p.m. in the Iguobazuwa area, when suspected kidnappers ambushed a bus belonging to GUO Transport. The attackers reportedly opened fire on the vehicle, killing the driver instantly.
According to the Edo State Police Command, five passengers were on board at the time.
One female passenger who sustained gunshot injuries was rescued by security operatives and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital, where she is said to be responding well.
However, three other passengers were abducted and taken into a nearby forest by the gunmen.
In response, the Commissioner of Police has ordered an intensified search and rescue operation across the Ore–Benin corridor. Security personnel, including the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and tactical teams, have been deployed to comb surrounding forests.

They are working in collaboration with local hunters and vigilante groups to locate the victims and apprehend the perpetrators.
Police authorities confirmed that the deceased driver’s body has been deposited in a mortuary, while the attacked vehicle has been secured as investigations continue.
The Command reassured the public of its commitment to ensuring the safe return of the abducted passengers and bringing those responsible to justice.
Residents were also urged to provide credible and timely information that could aid ongoing operations.
Eyewitness reports circulating earlier described heavy gunfire during the attack, further highlighting growing security concerns along the busy highway.
Efforts remain ongoing as security agencies intensify their operations in the affected area.
