Nigeria will make history as the first African nation to host the Commonwealth Fencing Championships in 2026.
The tournament is scheduled to take place in Lagos from August 9 to 14, with Rugby School Nigeria selected as the venue.
Adeyinka Samuel, President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation, said the championship will be unique not only for being held on African soil but also for incorporating development initiatives, such as an international pre-championship training camp to foster technical exchange among athletes.
“Nigeria’s hosting of this championship offers historic significance. Beyond the competition, we aim to showcase African culture, hospitality, and energy to the participating nations,” Samuel stated.

Preparations are already underway, covering venue readiness, logistics, athlete services, and partnerships. Over 24 Commonwealth nations have already confirmed participation.
Samuel explained that the choice of Rugby School Nigeria was due to its modern facilities and proximity to accommodation, tourism, and entertainment hubs, ensuring a comfortable and engaging experience for athletes and officials.
Nigeria has previously hosted international fencing events, including the junior épée World Cup in December 2024 and the 23rd African Fencing Championships in 2025.
While commending private sector partners such as Rugby School Nigeria and Flour Mills of Nigeria for supporting the championship, Samuel urged greater government involvement to maximize the event’s impact.
“This milestone achievement reflects Nigeria’s capacity to host world-class sports events. With proper support, we are confident of delivering a memorable championship for all participants,” he concluded.
