Former Dimitri Payet has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 38.
The ex-West Ham United and France national football team playmaker made the announcement on Sunday during a live interview on French television.
Payet, widely regarded as one of the most technically gifted midfielders of his generation, revealed his decision just days before his 39th birthday.
“Today, a few days before my 39th birthday, I am retiring as a professional footballer,” he said during halftime of a Ligue 1 clash between Olympique de Marseille and Lille OSC.
The Reunion-born star became a fan favorite in the English Premier League during his time at West Ham, where he dazzled supporters with his creativity, dribbling ability, and exceptional set-piece goals.
Between July 2015 and January 2017, Payet scored 15 goals and provided 22 assists in 60 appearances for the Hammers, earning a reputation as one of the league’s most exciting talents.
Over the course of his career, he also featured for several French clubs including AS Saint-Étienne, FC Nantes, Lille OSC, and Marseille, as well as Brazilian side CR Vasco da Gama.

On the international stage, Payet earned 38 caps for France and was part of the squad that reached the final of the UEFA Euro 2016.
A visibly emotional Payet explained that his decision was driven by a desire to step away rather than continue without full commitment.
“I don’t want to be part of a project where I can’t give 100 percent,” he said.
The midfielder had been without a club since leaving Vasco da Gama in July 2025.
His time in Brazil was overshadowed by off-field controversy, including a legal case stemming from allegations made by a Brazilian woman.
Reports indicate that while Payet admitted to an extramarital affair, he denied allegations of physical and psychological abuse. The matter is expected to proceed to trial in Brazil.
Despite the controversy, Payet’s legacy remains defined by his brilliance on the pitch, particularly his unforgettable moments in France and the Premier League.
