The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a stern warning to Nigerians regarding visa fraud and overstays, noting that such actions could lead to increased scrutiny for future applicants.
In a post on its X account yesterday, the US mission emphasized that the integrity of its visa system is safeguarded through rigorous screening procedures, and any attempt at fraud is taken very seriously.
Applicants are urged to report fraudulent visa activities to the appropriate authorities.
“Those who seek to commit fraud bring increased scrutiny on all visa applicants.
We protect the U.S. visa system with rigorous screening, and our officers take fraud very seriously. Nigerians continue to engage legally with the United States as temporary workers, professionals, entrepreneurs, and investors,” the post read.

The warning comes days after a similar notice on February 9, which highlighted that repeated overstays by Nigerian travellers remain a key reason for future visa denials.
Strengthening compliance, the US mission said, protects access for students, business travellers, and families who abide by the rules.
US consular authorities have expressed long-standing concerns about visa fraud linked to a minority of Nigerian applications.
These concerns have previously resulted in policy measures, including shorter visa validity periods for some Nigerian travellers and more intensive background checks, aimed at preserving the integrity of the US immigration system.
