England midfielder Jude Bellingham has dismissed suggestions of any serious confrontation with Lionel Messi during his side’s 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final.
The two players were seen exchanging words during Wednesday night’s fiercely contested encounter, prompting speculation of a heated altercation between the stars.
England had taken the lead through Anthony Gordon, but Argentina staged a late comeback with two goals to book their place in the World Cup final.

Speaking after the match, Bellingham insisted there was no bad blood between him and the Argentine captain.
“There were zero problems with Messi,” Bellingham said.
“We were talking about a frictional moment, actually there was nothing bad at all. I’m sure everyone will do their job and blow it out of proportion, but for me there was nothing.”
The 23-year-old also expressed his admiration for the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, describing the opportunity to share the pitch with Messi as a memorable experience.
“For me, it was a privilege to face Leo,” he added.
The comments are expected to put an end to speculation surrounding the brief exchange, with Bellingham making it clear that the incident was simply part of the emotions that come with a high-stakes World Cup semi-final.
