Speaking on ESPN, Burley acknowledged the excitement surrounding Neymar’s comeback but suggested his inclusion might be more sentimental than strategic.
“When Neymar entered the game, there was huge excitement,” Burley said. “But if you’re one of the players left out, you might see it as a sentimental decision. He looked out of sync and struggled, even against Scotland.”
Burley further questioned whether Brazil could rely on Neymar in crucial knockout matches against stronger opponents, especially given his recent lack of game time.
Despite the concerns, Brazil have progressed to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as Group C leaders, edging Morocco on goal difference with seven points.
