The Cross River State Police has arrested two men suspected of carrying out robberies at filling stations in Calabar and other parts of the state.
The suspects, identified as 29-year-old Samuel Udo Udo and 22-year-old Ezekiel Dominic, were arrested on September 9, 2026, by operatives of the Vehicle Crime Response Unit following a distress call.
According to the police, the two men were apprehended by an angry mob at a filling station around the University of Calabar area. They were reportedly at risk of being attacked before police operatives arrived and rescued them.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly presented themselves as customers who wanted to buy petrol before threatening filling station attendants and escaping with the fuel.

Police said 20 litres of petrol and a blue tricycle were recovered from the suspects.
The command also disclosed that further investigation led to the arrest of one of the suspects in Kano State, while efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals allegedly connected to the robberies.
The Commissioner of Police, Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, praised the VCRU operatives for their investigative efforts, intelligence gathering and cooperation across states.
He directed that the matter be thoroughly investigated and that anyone found guilty be prosecuted according to the law.
The police also condemned the attempt by the mob to subject the suspects to jungle justice, urging residents to hand suspected criminals over to the appropriate authorities.
It further assured residents that intelligence-led operations against robbery, burglary and other criminal activities would continue across the state, while appealing to members of the public to provide timely and credible information to the police.
