Two people have reportedly lost their lives after a refuse dump collapsed onto a building in Ikot Effanga, along the Old Odukpani Road in Calabar, Cross River State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, August 28, 2026, according to the Cross River State Police Command.
The police said officers were quickly deployed to the scene after receiving information about the incident. Preliminary findings showed that the accumulated refuse collapsed and struck a building reportedly constructed within a valley.
Two occupants of the building were trapped in the incident and later found dead.

The victims were identified as Nfon Imé, a male, and an unidentified woman.
Their bodies were recovered from the scene and subsequently deposited at a mortuary.
Confirming the incident in a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Cross River State Command, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said authorities had commenced an assessment to determine the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
The police also urged residents and members of the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information while investigations continue.
The Command said additional details would be made public once they had been properly verified.
