
Two people have died while two others are receiving treatment after allegedly consuming a substance suspected to be nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas,” in Isara Remo, Ogun State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday at Oke-Ola Phase II in Isara Remo. The four victims were said to have taken the substance together before two of them collapsed and died, while the remaining two were rushed to a hospital for medical attention.
Residents claimed the victims were students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic in Saapade, although authorities have not confirmed their identities or affiliation with the institution.
A community source said the group allegedly inhaled what they described as laughing gas, a substance increasingly abused for recreational purposes despite its legitimate medical use as an anaesthetic.
Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Police Command said it had launched an investigation into the suspected drug-related deaths.Police spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi stated that officers recovered the bodies of the deceased, which have since been deposited in a morgue for autopsy, while the surviving victims remain under medical care.

According to the police, investigations are ongoing to determine the exact substance consumed and the circumstances that led to the tragedy.The command also warned residents, particularly young people, against abusing illicit substances, stressing that such practices could have fatal consequences.
Attempts to obtain comments from the management of Gateway ICT Polytechnic were unsuccessful, as calls and messages to the institution’s spokesperson were not answered at the time of reporting.
Nitrous oxide, widely known as laughing gas, is commonly used in hospitals and dental procedures as an anaesthetic. However, health experts warn that recreational misuse of the gas can lead to serious medical complications and, in some cases, death.
