President Donald Trump has announced that he intends to permanently stop immigration from what he described as Third World countries, a decision that would directly affect nations such as Nigeria, Ghana, Somalia, Sudan, and Chad.
He made the remarks in his Thanksgiving message on Thursday, criticizing decades of U.S. immigration policies which he claimed have weakened the country and created social and economic problems.
Trump argued that the foreign-born population in the United States has risen to about 53 million people, with many arrivals coming from unstable nations, prisons, mental institutions, gangs, or drug cartels.
He also claimed that migrants with green cards receive more in public benefits than they contribute, saying a migrant earning $30,000 would receive roughly $50,000 in yearly benefits for their family.
He linked immigration to issues such as crime, strained public services, and the decline of urban communities. Using Minnesota as an example, he alleged that the influx of Somali refugees has transformed the state in ways that make residents feel unsafe.
Trump outlined several actions he plans to take, including shutting down migration from developing nations, ending federal benefits for non-citizens, cancelling what he called “Biden illegal admissions,” deporting those he considers a burden or security risk, reducing what he described as disruptive populations, and even revoking citizenship from migrants he believes undermine national stability.
He concluded that only reverse migration could solve the situation and issued a stern warning. His remarks came shortly after two National Guard members were shot in Washington, D.C. The suspect reportedly entered the United States in 2021 under Operation Allies Welcome after assisting American forces in Afghanistan and later received asylum.
