A Nigerian soldier, Lance Corporal Yusuf Zakari, has been killed during a military operation to repel an attack by suspected bandits on Manja community in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday as troops under Operation Enduring Peace moved to stop the attackers from advancing into the community through the Manja Forest, which borders Bokkos Local Government Area.
According to security sources, the troops confronted the armed assailants in a fierce gun battle after intercepting their movement toward the village. During the exchange of gunfire, Zakari was fatally wounded while carrying out his duties.
A security source said the soldier was part of a blocking force deployed to prevent the attackers from entering the community, which has experienced repeated security threats in recent months.
The source added that the attackers allegedly seized the fallen soldier’s weapon before retreating from the area after the confrontation.

The attack was also confirmed by conflict journalist Masara Kim Usman, who said armed men stormed Manja village while residents were attending church services. He stated that the attackers opened fire and set some houses ablaze before soldiers responded.
According to him, the military’s swift intervention helped evacuate many civilians to safety, although one soldier lost his life during the operation.
The latest incident adds to ongoing security concerns in parts of Plateau State, where several communities have faced recurring attacks, prompting renewed calls for stronger security measures to protect lives and property.
