The Premier League has clarified the reason behind the controversial VAR decision that ruled out West Ham United’s late equaliser against Arsenal during Saturday’s Premier League clash.
Arsenal appeared set for a narrow 1-0 victory at the London Stadium after Leandro Trossard scored what proved to be the decisive goal late in the encounter.
However, drama unfolded deep into stoppage time when West Ham striker Calum Wilson bundled the ball into the net, sparking celebrations among the home supporters.

The on-field referee initially awarded the goal, but after a lengthy VAR review, he was instructed to consult the pitch-side monitor. Following the review, the decision was overturned and the goal was disallowed.
In a statement released via the Premier League Match Centre on X, officials explained that Wilson was judged to have fouled the Arsenal goalkeeper in the build-up to the goal.
The statement read: “After VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision of goal to West Ham United. After review, West Ham number 19 commits a foul on the goalkeeper. Final decision is direct free kick.”
The result handed Arsenal a crucial victory in the title race, moving the Gunners five points clear of Manchester City with only two matches remaining this season.
The controversial decision has since generated widespread debate among fans and pundits over the consistency of VAR interventions in decisive Premier League fixtures.
