The Kebbi State Police Command has prevented an angry mob from lynching two men suspected of stealing motorcycles in the Gesse Phase 1 area of Birnin Kebbi.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 26, following allegations that the suspects, identified as Rufai Salihu and Aliyu Muhammad, were involved in motorcycle theft.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, officers responded to the scene and rescued the two suspects from the mob. Both men reportedly sustained injuries and were taken to a medical facility for treatment.
Police recovered one Boxer motorcycle allegedly found in the suspects’ possession. The situation later escalated when the mob reportedly attempted to attack a police facility in the area.
Reinforcement was subsequently deployed, leading to the dispersal of the mob. Seven motorcycles abandoned during the incident were also recovered and impounded by the police.

The suspects are currently assisting investigators as authorities work to determine their alleged involvement in motorcycle theft and identify other persons who may be connected to the suspected criminal network.
The Commissioner of Police in Kebbi State, CP Umar M. Hadejia, condemned the resort to jungle justice and urged residents to allow the police and other lawful authorities to investigate allegations and prosecute offenders through due process.
He warned that individuals involved in mob attacks, assaults on police officers or facilities, and other forms of self-help would face the full weight of the law.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property while intensifying efforts to tackle motorcycle theft and other criminal activities across the state.
