The Kwara State Police Command has launched efforts to identify and apprehend a woman accused of triggering panic in Oke-Oyi community, Moro Local Government Area, after falsely raising an alarm about an alleged bandit invasion.
The incident occurred on Thursday morning and caused widespread fear among residents, particularly around Government Girls Secondary School, Oke-Oyi, where academic activities were temporarily disrupted as students and teachers scrambled for safety.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the command received reports of a suspected bandit attack at about 9:15 a.m. Officers were immediately deployed to the school and surrounding areas to assess the situation and ensure public safety.
Investigations later revealed that the panic stemmed from an unverified claim made by a woman who reportedly ran into the school premises shouting that bandits had entered the community. Her alarm quickly spread, causing confusion and forcing a temporary suspension of school activities.

However, police operatives found no evidence of any bandit attack or security threat after conducting checks in the area.
“The report was entirely false and without any factual basis. There was no bandit attack, no sighting of bandits, and no security breach within the school or anywhere in Oke-Oyi community or Kwara State,” the police stated.
The Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, condemned the spread of false security information, warning that such actions create unnecessary panic and divert security personnel from genuine emergencies.
He stressed that misinformation on security matters could undermine public confidence and lead to avoidable public disorder.
The command said efforts are ongoing to identify the woman responsible for the false alarm.
If found culpable, she will face prosecution under laws relating to the dissemination of false information and actions capable of disturbing public peace.
Residents have been advised to remain calm and verify security-related information through official channels before sharing it. The police also reassured the public that there was no security breach in Oke-Oyi or any other part of Kwara State and reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
