
The Taraba State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has confirmed a deadly ambush on residents of Kofai Amadu community in Takum Local Government Area, leaving one person dead.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday around 4:00 p.m., reportedly took place in a busy trading area where locals from different ethnic groups had gathered for their usual commercial activities.
Eyewitnesses said panic broke out after gunshots were suddenly heard from a nearby bush close to the yam market. The unexpected attack forced traders, farmers returning from their fields, and other residents to flee for safety.
Some farmers in nearby farmlands later reported sighting armed men moving around a settlement located about two kilometres from the market area, heightening fears among residents.
Amid the chaos, the lifeless body of a young man with gunshot wounds was discovered. Community members quickly alerted security operatives, who responded to the scene, restored calm, and commenced preliminary investigations.

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Victor Mshelizah, stated that the victims were attacked while attempting to return to their homes in a crisis-affected area to retrieve belongings.
He added that the assailants were suspected to be armed militia and that the deceased was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.
According to the police, the situation in the area has since been brought under control, with normalcy gradually returning.
Meanwhile, residents of Kofai Amadu have called on security agencies to intensify surveillance and ensure that those responsible for the attack are apprehended and brought to justice.
