
Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested a suspected armed robber and recovered a locally fabricated firearm during a coordinated security operation in Uyo, the state capital.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Timfon John, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, noting that the arrest followed a distress call from residents of Ikot Okubo Village in Uyo Local Government Area.
According to the statement, officers who were on stop-and-search duty along the Mayflower axis of Oron Road received the alert at about 10:30 p.m. and swiftly mobilised to the scene.
The police operatives, working in collaboration with vigilant youths in the community, cordoned off the area and carried out a thorough search, leading to the arrest of the suspect identified as Edidiong Udoeyen.
A medium-sized locally fabricated firearm was recovered from his possession.

The police spokesperson added that other suspected members of the gang fled the scene upon sighting the operatives, and efforts are currently underway to apprehend them.
She further stated that the suspect remains in police custody and will undergo a comprehensive investigation to determine his level of involvement and to identify other members of the criminal network.
The Commissioner of Police commended members of the community for their prompt and useful information, emphasising that effective policing relies heavily on cooperation between security agencies and the public.
He also assured residents of the command’s commitment to sustaining intelligence-driven and proactive policing strategies aimed at keeping the state safe.
Residents were urged to continue providing credible information to security agencies, with assurances that all reports would be treated with strict confidentiality.
