The Oyo State Police Command has commenced an investigation into an alleged extortion incident involving two officers of the Federal Highway Patrol Unit on the Idiayunre/Ijebu-Ode Expressway.
The investigation was ordered by the Commissioner of Police following an allegation made by a commercial bus driver during an incident that occurred in September 2026.
According to the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the incident happened at about 11am after the bus driver allegedly overtook a truck being stopped by Federal Highway Patrol officers in a manner that nearly resulted in a serious accident.
The driver reportedly stopped after sighting another patrol team ahead. One of the officers, identified as ASP OyetaÂde Olayinka, approached the bus and requested the driver’s licence and other vehicle documents.
However, the police said the driver allegedly refused to present the documents and instead contacted the Chairman of Onitsha Garage, identified as Mr BJ.
The chairman later arrived at the scene with other members of the park leadership in a Toyota Sienna bus. The development reportedly led personnel from the Safer Highway and Federal Highway Patrol units to work together to control the situation and prevent disruption to traffic.
During the incident, the driver reportedly began recording with his mobile phone and made allegations against the officers. The park chairman subsequently intervened and appealed to the officers as efforts were made to resolve the matter.

Following the allegation, the Oyo State Police Command invited the two officers involved to its headquarters for questioning. They were interviewed and later made statements under caution.
The command said its preliminary investigation did not establish evidence that the officers extorted the driver.
However, the police stressed that the investigation remains ongoing and that further steps are being taken to determine what actually happened.
The leadership of Onitsha Garage has also been invited to assist with the investigation. The park leaders reportedly agreed to produce the driver so he can make his own statement and provide further clarification on the allegation.
The police said it is awaiting the driver’s appearance and will base its final position on facts established through the investigation.
