Tension erupted in Osogbo, Osun State, after residents who had paid for food items through a cheap-food scheme stormed the operators’ warehouse and looted its contents.
The incident occurred on Tuesday at the Odi-Olowo area of Osogbo, following reports that the operators had disappeared after collecting money from customers.
Some residents said they had paid large sums for rice and other food items, attracted by prices significantly below the prevailing market rates.
One resident, Mistura, reportedly paid ₦300,000 for 11 bags of rice, expecting to receive them a week after payment. Another customer, Olamide, said she paid ₦1.2 million for various food items meant for her stepdaughter’s upcoming wedding.

After waiting unsuccessfully for the operators to return, frustrated customers gathered at the premises and demanded answers.
By about 4pm on Tuesday, some members of the crowd reportedly forced their way into the warehouse and began taking bags of rice, noodles, groundnut oil and other food items.
Despite heavy rainfall, the looting continued as a small number of police officers struggled to control the crowd. Security agents reportedly fired tear-gas canisters to disperse the residents.
The situation remained tense as efforts continued to restore order and determine how affected customers could recover their money.
