A Nigerian national, Augustine Okechuku Maazi, has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service following an alleged attempt to rob three banks in the Labone area of Accra.
The police said they received intelligence at about 10:45 a.m. on August 13 that a gang was planning to attack GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank branches in Labone.
Following the information, police officers were deployed to the area, where they reportedly spotted members of the suspected gang in vehicles parked close to the banks.
According to the police, one of the vehicles sped away after the suspects sighted the officers, prompting a chase that led to the arrest of Maazi. Another occupant of the vehicle reportedly escaped.
The occupants of a second vehicle also allegedly attempted to flee while firing at the police. Officers returned fire, resulting in the deaths of two suspected robbers.
The police recovered a Toyota Highlander with registration number GS-1434-18, a Hyundai Tucson with registration number GS 7915-17 and a blow pistol.
Maazi remains in police custody and is assisting investigators with the ongoing probe, while the bodies of the two deceased suspects have been deposited at a morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
The Ghana Police Service said investigations into the alleged robbery plot are continuing.
