Nicki Minaj has spoken candidly about what she describes as the challenges and “spiritual warfare” she has faced throughout her career in the music industry.
Appearing on The Bryce Crawford Podcast, the Trinidadian rapper and singer-songwriter alleged that powerful figures within the industry often work against talented artists who refuse to align with their interests. While Minaj did not identify any specific individuals or organizations, she suggested that many of the obstacles faced by artists are deliberately orchestrated behind the scenes.
Reflecting on the early stages of her career, Minaj said the industry initially felt supportive and collaborative, with artists encouraging one another’s success.
“I think it took a while because in the beginning it was pretty much a lot of fun. Honestly, it was. We had so much fun rooting for each other. I thought that’s how it would always be. I thought everyone just rooted for each other to win,” she said.
However, her outlook changed as she began noticing what she described as a more competitive and exclusionary culture.
“I started realising that if you don’t get money with one person or a specific group of people, they don’t want you to get money at all. And that’s when I started realising, ‘Oh my God, what did I sign up for?’” she added.
Minaj further claimed that some influential industry figures view artists as assets to be exploited for profit and may attempt to undermine those who choose not to participate in such arrangements.
The rapper also discussed the emotional and personal impact of navigating the music business, describing her experience as a constant spiritual battle.
“It was like constant spiritual warfare. I wish I would have known sooner that this music industry was such a spiritual experience because I felt like I brought a knife to a gunfight,” she said.
“Without having that information, I didn’t feel equipped for what was ahead, and no one had given me a heads up. I had to figure it out when I got there.”
Minaj’s comments add to ongoing conversations about power dynamics, artist independence, and the pressures faced by performers in the entertainment industry.
