The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has contained a fire outbreak at Akanimodo Market in the Mile 12 area of Lagos State, while also responding to two separate incidents involving broken-down trucks across the state.
The agency confirmed that no casualties were recorded in the fire outbreak or either of the truck-related incidents.
In a statement on Wednesday, November 4, LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency’s Tiger Response Team was activated at about 2:14 p.m. following reports of the fire and arrived at the scene 16 minutes later.
According to him, the fire affected a section of shanties within the market, mainly occupied by plastic recycling operators, with some structures also serving as residential accommodation for workers.
He explained that the buildings, largely constructed with combustible materials such as wooden planks, contributed to the rapid spread of the flames.
Traders and residents reportedly made initial efforts to contain the fire before the arrival of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service. However, congestion and limited access to the affected area initially delayed the firefighters’ entry.

LASEMA disclosed that approximately 90 per cent of the fire had been brought under control, while emergency responders continued dampening operations to extinguish remaining flames and prevent a recurrence.
The cause of the fire had yet to be determined, as an assessment of the damage was ongoing.
In a separate incident, the agency’s Beta Response Team responded to a broken-down truck at Idimu, inward Egbeda, around 12:32 a.m. The vehicle reportedly developed a steering system fault, obstructing traffic in both directions.
Working alongside the police, the team successfully moved the truck off the road, restoring normal traffic flow.
Similarly, another response team attended to a cement-laden truck at Odo-Ayandelu, inward Shagamu Road, Agbowa, after it developed a flat tyre. With assistance from the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, the damaged tyre was replaced, allowing the vehicle to continue its journey.
Oke-Osanyintolu urged traders and residents to comply with fire safety regulations, avoid storing combustible materials in residential spaces and ensure proper handling of electrical installations.
