The Kaduna State Police Command has recovered a newborn baby allegedly stolen from his mother in the Sabon Gari New Extension area of Kaduna South Local Government Area.
A woman suspected of taking the baby was also arrested following the intervention of residents who became suspicious after seeing her with the child in the Unguwar Ma’azu area.
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday when the suspect visited the baby’s family home and allegedly introduced herself as a distant relative of the child’s father.
According to the baby’s mother, Amina, she was informed on Monday evening that a woman in the neighbourhood was claiming to have recently given birth.
Suspicion reportedly grew when the woman could not breastfeed the baby and gave different accounts about the child.
Amina said a relative alerted her and asked her to come and identify the newborn. Upon arriving at the woman’s residence, she reportedly recognised her as the person who had earlier visited her home.
Residents prevented the mother from confronting the suspect and contacted the police.
The baby was subsequently taken to the police station, where he was reunited with his mother.
A resident who assisted in locating the child, identified as Malam Garba, said the woman initially claimed she had delivered three days earlier.

He said she later told residents that her baby was receiving treatment at a hospital before allegedly claiming that the child had died.
The discovery of the woman with a newborn reportedly raised further concerns, prompting residents to search for the family whose baby had been reported missing.
Confirming the development, the Kaduna State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, said the baby had been recovered and the suspect arrested.
He added that the suspect was undergoing interrogation while investigations continued to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction and determine whether other persons were involved.
