The death toll from Friday’s multiple-vehicle crash on the Jos-Abuja highway in Plateau State has risen to 23 after three additional bodies were recovered from the bush near the accident scene.
The crash occurred around Hawan Kibo, a steep and winding section of the highway, and involved four vehicles, including a Howo Sino Truck, a Toyota Corolla and a Toyota Hummer bus operated by Yankari Express.
At least 20 people were initially confirmed dead, while several others sustained injuries.
Eyewitnesses said the truck reportedly lost control while descending the steep section of the road, allegedly following brake failure, before crashing into other vehicles.

The accident, which occurred at about 6:00 p.m., reportedly left several victims trapped inside their vehicles as residents and rescuers struggled to assist those affected.
The injured victims were taken to nearby health centres for treatment.
A resident of the area said three more bodies were later found in the bush around the scene, raising the confirmed death toll to 23.
Residents described the Hawan Kibo section as a dangerous part of the highway due to its steep bends and rocky terrain, which they said has made the area hazardous for motorists over the years.
