Hundreds of residents of Rukukuje community in Rijau Local Government Area of Niger State have reportedly fled their homes following a fresh advance by armed bandits from neighbouring Zamfara State.
The residents were seen crossing a river on Tuesday, October 13, in a desperate attempt to reach safety in Shambo.
A video shared on X showed large numbers of displaced persons, including women, children and elderly people, wading through muddy waters while carrying food supplies, cooking items and other personal belongings. Some residents were also seen pushing motorcycles through the river.
Local sources said the mass displacement followed an aggressive movement by bandits from the Zamfara axis early Tuesday morning, forcing residents to abandon their homes for fear of being attacked.
