
A humanitarian worker, identified as Lydia Nwankwo, has been killed after suspected bandits attacked her team in Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
According to reports, the incident occurred on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, as Nwankwo and her colleagues were returning from field operations in Kajiji community. The attackers reportedly opened fire on their vehicle, killing her at the scene.
Her sister, Chisom Nwankwo, confirmed the tragic incident in a Facebook post on Thursday, October 8.

Nwankwo, a humanitarian and field operations professional, was remembered by colleagues as a dedicated worker committed to supporting vulnerable communities, particularly those in hard-to-reach areas.
Confirming the attack, the Sokoto State Police Command said suspected bandits had attacked communities in Shagari Local Government Area. The command’s spokesperson, DSP Ahmed Rufai, stated that the police were still gathering information and could not immediately provide further details.
The incident has renewed concerns over insecurity in the affected communities, with residents calling for increased security presence and sustained patrols to prevent further attacks.
