Tragedy struck in Edo State as gunmen brutally killed an 85-year-old community leader, Hon. Reuben Owie, in Ovia North-East Local Government Area.
The deceased, who served as the Secretary and leader of the Iyowa community, was reportedly attacked at his residence in Iguosa, near Okhunhun Road in Benin City. According to reports, the incident occurred around 8:15 p.m. on Sunday, August 2, 2026, when two unidentified armed men stormed his home.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that one of the assailants shot the octogenarian at close range, leading to his immediate death.
The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident through its Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem. She disclosed that the case was reported by the victim’s son, Osayomwanbo Owie, shortly after the attack.

Police operatives visited the scene, documented evidence, and evacuated the body, which has since been deposited at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).
Authorities have launched an investigation into the killing, with efforts ongoing to track down and apprehend the perpetrators.
The shocking incident has heightened concerns over security in the area, as residents call for swift justice and improved safety measures.
