Nigeria’s men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, could soon receive a major boost ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games after four NBA players reportedly expressed interest in representing the country.
The development follows the appointment of experienced American coach David Fizdale as the new head coach of the national team by the Nigeria Basketball Federation.
Basketball journalist Coach Hova disclosed that Aaron Nesmith has already committed to playing for Nigeria during the next international basketball window.
The forward currently plays for the Indiana Pacers after beginning his NBA career with the Boston Celtics.
Hova also revealed that Desmond Bane is in the process of switching his international allegiance to Nigeria ahead of the 2028 Olympics.
Bane is reportedly playing a key role in convincing other Nigerian-eligible players to join the D’Tigers project.
Earlier this year, Bane publicly spoke about his desire to help Nigeria build a competitive team capable of challenging for honours at the Olympics.
He explained that discussions had already taken place with several players, including Nesmith and Gabe Vincent, about representing the country.

Meanwhile, reports also suggest that Onyeka Okongwu remains interested in playing for Nigeria under Fizdale. The Atlanta Hawks centre previously missed an invitation opportunity due to late arrangements, but talks are ongoing ahead of future international fixtures.
Another player being monitored closely is Ayo Dosunmu, who is yet to make a final decision on his international future. The new coaching crew are believed to be working hard to persuade him to commit to D’Tigers.
Dosunmu previously represented the United States at youth level, winning gold at the 2018 FIBA U18 Americas Championship, meaning a switch to Nigeria could require additional approval from basketball authorities.
Since taking charge, Fizdale has made it clear that qualifying Nigeria for the 2028 Summer Olympics remains one of his major ambitions.
Nigeria has appeared in the Olympic men’s basketball tournament at the 2012 Summer Olympics, 2016 Summer Olympics and 2020 Summer Olympics, but D’Tigers are still chasing their first-ever Olympic basketball medal.
