Five people have lost their lives while 18 others sustained injuries in a multiple-vehicle crash along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.
The fatal accident occurred around 3:18 p.m. on Thursday at the Ugwu-Onyeama axis of the expressway, near the LNG plant.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that the crash involved three vehicles—a Dongfeng trailer, a Mitsubishi L300 commercial bus and a Honda car.
According to the FRSC, 25 people were involved in the crash, comprising 13 males and 12 females. Eighteen victims, including seven males and 11 females, sustained injuries, while five people—four males and one female—were confirmed dead.
The FRSC Enugu State Sector Command Public Enlightenment Officer, Route Commander Theophilus Okoduwa, said emergency responders arrived at the scene within nine minutes after the incident was reported.

He explained that the injured victims were evacuated to Tex Hospital at 9th Mile Corner for immediate medical attention, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at Ekochin Morgue, 9th Mile.
Traffic was subsequently diverted as FRSC officials continued efforts to clear the wreckage and restore normal movement along the affected section of the expressway.
Preliminary findings by the road safety agency indicated that wrongful overtaking and speeding may have contributed to the crash.
The FRSC urged motorists to exercise caution, avoid dangerous overtaking and observe speed limits to prevent further tragedies on the highway.
