A fire outbreak has destroyed 15 shops at the popular Bodija foodstuffs market in Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State, leaving traders counting their losses after goods and valuables worth millions of naira were reportedly destroyed.
The incident occurred on Monday, October 19, 2026, after a fire reportedly started in one of the shops before spreading to neighbouring businesses.
The Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency and Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Services Reform, Moroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Ibadan.
According to Akinwande, preliminary findings suggested that an electrical fault or surge caused by faulty wiring may have triggered the fire.
Firefighters, led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent Bamidele, responded promptly and brought the blaze under control. Their intervention prevented the fire from spreading beyond the affected section of the market.

He also encouraged the public to adopt preventive measures and respond quickly to fire outbreaks to minimise damage and protect lives and property.
The incident has once again highlighted the importance of electrical safety and fire prevention in busy commercial markets.
