The Delta State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Igbunu Evans for allegedly purchasing a prohibited firearm through social media.
The arrest was disclosed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, in a video shared on Tuesday, where he displayed the recovered weapon and raised concerns over the growing trend of illegal arms acquisition online.
According to Edafe, the suspect was found in possession of a Beretta pistol, complete with a magazine and two rounds of 9mm ammunition.
He emphasized that such firearms are restricted and legally reserved for authorised security agencies.
During interrogation, Evans, a native of Sapele in Delta State, reportedly admitted that he acquired the weapon through Snapchat.
He stated that he ordered the firearm from a “smoke vendor” on the platform and paid the sum of N450,000 for its delivery.

The suspect claimed that the gun was intended for self-protection against threats such as kidnappers and unknown gunmen.
However, he also confessed to engaging in internet fraud for a period of three to four years.
Reacting to the development, Edafe linked the incident to a broader pattern of criminal behavior, noting that crimes such as internet fraud, cultism, substance abuse, and illegal possession of firearms are often interconnected.
He reiterated that it is unlawful for private individuals to possess prohibited firearms under any circumstance, stressing that such weapons cannot be justified for personal security purposes.
The police spokesperson confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
