Residents of Ogoda community in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State have been thrown into fear following the discovery of the decomposing remains of an unidentified woman in a nearby stream.
The remains were reportedly recovered on Sunday by security personnel and the Chairman of Ahoada West Local Government Area, Eugene Epelle, who visited the community after the incident was reported.
The woman was suspected to have been abducted and killed, while some parts of her body were allegedly missing.
Epelle condemned the incident and promised that efforts would be made to uncover those responsible for the woman’s death.
He also appealed to residents to remain calm, assuring them that security would be strengthened across the local government area.
The Paramount Ruler of Ogoda, Chief Tom Obutu, said the discovery had caused fear among residents.
Obutu alleged that the woman was abducted by some young men from a neighbouring community before she was killed and dumped near the river.

He said he reported the matter to the police, after which security personnel and the local government chairman went into the swamp and recovered the body from the water.
The remains were subsequently deposited in a mortuary as authorities continued efforts to identify the deceased.
The spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Blessing Agabe, confirmed the incident and said investigation was ongoing.
Agabe said the police were working to establish the identity of the woman and apprehend those responsible for the alleged killing.
