Celebrity fashion designer Toyin Lawani has recounted a harrowing experience at a Lagos-based hospital, alleging serious complications following a surgical procedure.
Lawani revealed that she had gone in for spine surgery but developed severe health issues afterward, including lung infection and loss of mobility. According to her, she spent nearly ₦100 million on the procedure and subsequent treatment, yet her condition deteriorated.
The mother of three accused the hospital of medical mismanagement and said she intends to take legal action once her health improves.
Sharing updates on Instagram, Lawani disclosed that she underwent multiple surgeries after developing breathing complications. She said she suffered bleeding in her lungs, which required an emergency reoperation, during which her lungs were punctured and her vocal cords damaged, leaving her unable to speak properly.

She further explained that after being discharged, she lost the use of her legs and had to return to the hospital. Following advice from a UK-based ENT specialist, she underwent a third surgery to remove a tracheostomy tube before being flown to the United Kingdom for further treatment.
Lawani said doctors in the UK later discovered infections in her lungs, which required additional surgery. She added that she is still in and out of hospital receiving treatment.
Expressing her frustration, the designer lamented the state of healthcare management, insisting that patients are often made to pay for the consequences of medical negligence.
