Suspected bandits on Wednesday night attacked a police station in the Ipele-Owo community of Owo Local Government Area, Ondo State, causing panic among residents.
The attack occurred around 10 p.m. as Christians were preparing for crossover church services. Both police officers and residents reportedly fled for safety as the assailants invaded the area.
Sources said the attackers set the police station ablaze during the assault. An eyewitness, who requested anonymity, said about 20 armed men stormed the community in a coordinated manner, firing gunshots indiscriminately and forcing residents to abandon their homes.
According to the witness, the intensity of the attack left many people with no option but to flee into nearby bushes. “It was terrifying. The gunshots were overwhelming, and nobody could stand their ground,” the source said.
Confirming the incident, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Abayomi, said the attack took place but noted that full details were still being compiled. “Yes, it happened, but we will provide more details tomorrow,” he said.
Meanwhile, security operatives have been deployed to the community to restore calm and prevent further unrest.
