Peter Obi condemns government over unpaid Super Eagles allowances

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has criticised the Federal Government over reports that the Super Eagles are yet to receive their allowances, calling it a stark reflection of a “now disgraced” nation.

Peter Obi has reacted to concerns raised by Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi, who posted a video highlighting the reportedly poor conditions of the team’s accommodation in Rabat, Morocco, ahead of Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff against Gabon.

Speaking on Tuesday via X, Obi described the situation as “truly unfortunate,” noting that players who “consistently give their best in representing our dear nation” are still owed their entitlements, even as the government continues lavish spending on “needless political patronage.”

Peter Obi expressed concern over the neglect of national athletes, warning that it sends the wrong message to Nigerian youth. He stressed that those representing the country “deserve timely payment and respect,” urging authorities to “do better” and place greater emphasis on the welfare of the nation’s representatives.

He expressed deep concern over the situation, saying it is truly unfortunate that the Super Eagles—who consistently give their best in representing Nigeria—are still owed their allowances.

“While funds are often found for unnecessary lavish spending and political patronage, those who patriotically serve our nation and bring us pride are left unpaid. This reflects the state of a country now disgraced,” he said.

He added that failing to treat national representatives with dignity sends the wrong message to the youth, suggesting that hard work and service go unrewarded. “Those who represent Nigeria deserve prompt payment and respect. We must do better.”
