Why I want to be first white afrobeat star — Becca Diamond

A United Kingdom-born singer, Becca Diamond, has said she is determined to break barriers in the afrobeat genre and become the first white woman to make a lasting mark on the vibrant African soundscape.

Becca, whose real name is Rebecca Ward, told Sunday Scoop that her love for music began at the age of seven when she performed on stage with her father at a pub.

“My dad used to sing and play in pubs, and my mum also sang when she was my age. Music runs deep in my family, and those early moments planted the seed,” she said

A psychology graduate and certified CBT coach from Birkenhead, Wirral, Becca holds additional qualifications in law and mindfulness, an unconventional mix she believes enriches her musical journey.

Speaking on her vision to stand out in afrobeat, Becca said, “I love African culture. It’s so rich and powerful. Afrobeat is amazing, and I want to challenge myself by stepping into something new, something many have tried and failed. I want to be the white girl who broke the limits, and opened the door for others to follow.”

On how she handles doubts or pushback about her afrobeat ambition, she said, “It’s not easy stepping into a space where people might question your presence. But I remind myself that I’m coming from a place of deep respect and genuine passion. I’m not here to copy; I’m here to contribute.
