The Abia State Police Command has launched an investigation following the discovery of the remains of a missing landlady inside a 30-foot soakaway pit in her neighbour’s compound in Umueleghele, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of the state.
The woman’s disappearance reportedly sparked an extensive search by community members after she remained missing for several days.
According to a community source, residents initially believed she had travelled before growing concerned and notifying the traditional ruler, who mobilised the town crier and local youths to search farms, bushes, pathways and uncompleted buildings.
The search eventually led to the discovery of her remains inside the soakaway pit in a neighbouring compound.
Community sources alleged that the deceased had been involved in a land dispute with a man in the area identified locally as ‘New World’. They claimed she had refused to sell part of her land to him and linked the dispute to her disappearance.

There were also allegations that acid had been poured into the pit and that some parts of the victim’s body were missing when her remains were recovered. However, these claims, including suggestions of ritual involvement, have not been independently verified.
The suspect was reportedly handed over to the police for investigation.
Confirming the incident on Friday, the Commissioner of Police, AIG Wilfred Afolabi, said the matter was being investigated.
The police have yet to publicly identify a suspect or establish the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death as investigations continue.
