Afrobeats singer and entrepreneur Mr Eazi has revealed that he could have pursued a career in professional football, claiming that English Premier League club Chelsea FC was interested in signing him before the club secured the services of former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel.
The singer made the revelation during an interview with The Beat FM on Wednesday, where he spoke about his decision to focus on music instead of football.
According to Mr Eazi, he and Mikel Obi were linked to a possible move to Chelsea around the same period. However, he said he believed football was a better fit for Mikel, while his own strength and future prospects lay in music.
“They were gonna sign me. So, it was like Mikel Obi and me,” the singer reportedly said during the interview.
Explaining his decision, Mr Eazi jokingly suggested that Mikel lacked musical talent, while he believed he had the ability to succeed in the entertainment industry.
“I just thought that Mikel Obi is not; he doesn’t have talent as a musician. But I can do that. So I let Mikel go to Chelsea,” he said.

The singer also connected his decision to his broader philosophy about success and giving others the opportunity to shine. He explained that he is comfortable stepping aside for others while concentrating on his own ambitions.
“So with this, with the music too, I had to, like, step back, go make a couple billions and then let other people shine,” he added.
Mr Eazi further referenced fellow Nigerian singer Seyi Vibez, whom he jokingly described as a great Nigerian philosopher, for popularising the expression, “Let your brother shine.”
John Obi Mikel joined Chelsea in 2006 and went on to spend 11 years at the English club, becoming an important member of the squad during one of its most successful periods.
During his time at Stamford Bridge, the former Nigerian international won two Premier League titles, four FA Cups and the UEFA Champions League in 2012, among other honours.
Meanwhile, Mr Eazi has established himself as one of Africa’s internationally recognised Afrobeats artists, building a career that spans music, entrepreneurship and investments in the creative industry.
His latest comments have offered a humorous glimpse into an alternative career path, suggesting that while Mikel made his mark on the football pitch, Mr Eazi chose to pursue his ambitions in music and business.
