Residents of some communities in Benue State have expressed fears over an alleged plan to bring armed fighters from Cameroon, Chad and Niger into the state to foment violence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sources familiar with the allegations reportedly raised concerns that the suspected plan could destabilise communities and worsen the security challenges facing the state.
The National Intelligence Watch, a civic organisation, has called on security agencies to investigate the claims and identify anyone suspected of sponsoring violence.
In a statement signed by its chairman, Chief Matthew Apine, the group warned that, if confirmed, the alleged plot could threaten the safety of residents, undermine public peace and compromise the credibility of the forthcoming elections.
The organisation also expressed concern over allegations that insecurity could be exploited to discredit the state government and influence the outcome of the 2027 governorship election.
It urged security agencies to act professionally and impartially, intensify surveillance in vulnerable communities and ensure that anyone found culpable is prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The group further called on political leaders to pursue their differences through lawful democratic channels rather than engage in activities capable of escalating tensions.
Residents were also advised to report credible security information to the appropriate authorities and avoid spreading unverified claims that could trigger panic or deepen political divisions.
The National Intelligence Watch urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and relevant security agencies to work together to ensure peaceful, transparent and credible elections in 2027.
It stressed that protecting lives, maintaining public order and safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic process must take priority over political interests.
As of the time of the report, the allegations remained unverified, underscoring the need for a thorough investigation by the relevant authorities.
