The Imo State Police Command has launched a coordinated search and rescue operation following the abduction of passengers, including members of the National Youth Service Corps, by suspected gunmen in the state.
The incident occurred at about 6:30am on Thursday, October 1, 2026, when two buses travelling from Ibadan to Uyo in Akwa Ibom State and Bende in Abia State were attacked along the Owerri-Onitsha Road near Umunoha in Mbaitoli Local Government Area.
According to the police, security operatives responded to the attack and recovered both buses while rescuing 10 victims from the scene.
The Command said efforts were ongoing to establish the exact number of passengers still being held by the attackers.
Tactical teams and other security personnel have been deployed to the surrounding areas to track the suspected abductors and rescue the remaining victims.
The Imo State Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, visited the scene with other security commanders to assess the situation and issue further operational directives.
Bosso assured that security operatives would continue the operation until all the remaining victims were safely recovered and the suspected attackers arrested.
The police also said it was working with the NYSC directorate to contact the families of affected corps members and provide them with updates on the rescue efforts.
