At least 48 people have died and 182 others have been affected following the consumption of a locally produced alcoholic concoction known as “monkey tail” in Ondo State.
The NMA-NAFDAC Liaison Committee confirmed that laboratory tests by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) detected high concentrations of methanol in samples collected from Odigbo, Irele and surrounding areas. Cannabis indica was also detected in the samples.
The committee said five victims have been left permanently blind, while two others suffered partial loss of vision.
According to the committee, methanol is an industrial solvent that is not meant for human consumption. When ingested, it can cause severe poisoning, including damage to the optic nerve, irreversible blindness, organ failure and death.

Victims reportedly experienced symptoms including severe headache, abdominal pain, weakness, altered consciousness, breathing difficulties and blurred or “snowfield” vision after consuming the drink.
The committee also disclosed that 15 suspects had been arrested and called for stronger action against illegal distilleries, unregistered herbal mixtures and open-market distribution of unsafe alcoholic drinks.
Authorities and health professionals were urged to remain vigilant and promptly report suspected cases, while the public was advised to avoid unlabelled and unregistered alcoholic beverages.
